Reflections on 2011

Around this time of year it's hard not to reflect on the year that has passed. So many friends have made comments like, "Good riddance 2011!" or "2011 was THE BEST". Maybe it's the therapist in me that refuses to see things as all good or all bad. And yet, it's almost impossible to not categorize.

For me, 2011 was calm.

{2010 was the opposite: a new job, wedding planning, the loss of Mr. Fix-Its Mom, getting married, and renovating our condo.}

2011 brought me a calm I haven't experienced before. I recently realized that it was one of the first years without any major life events, no significant changes. I didn't move, didn't start school or graduate, didn't get engaged/married, didn't buy a car, or a home. With that calm came room for growth. I found myself in a place where I could push myself, learn new things, and take on new challenges. For the first time I didn't think, "I can't start that now because X is coming up." In a world where it's so easy to get fixated on the next thing, I found time to live.

I'm proud of what I've accomplished this year. I nurtured hobbies and interests that I had never fully pursued before.

1. I stopped being intimidated by yoga classes. In fact, I now go 1-3 times per week. It engages me equally physically and mentally.

2. I have found something I truly call a hobby: photography. I have educated myself on how to use a camera, and now shoot 100% in manual. I am proud to have developed this skill set, and am excited to grow even more in the next year.

3. I am capable and confident in the kitchen. I can throw together a delicious dinner without a recipe, and have come to understand the ins-and-outs of combining ingredients from intuition. I also love that I learn more and more as I continue to cook and try new recipes.

What are you proud of this year?

  1. Succeeding and thriving as a family on one income. It was so scary at first, but turned out to be much more manageable then I first thought.

  2. What a great list! For me, it has to be becoming a mother of two. Granted, we only got 2 months of that in 2011, but I already have trouble remembering what life was like before my second came along!

  3. Well done! It is so easy to focus on the next big thing or event and let personal interests or goals take a backseat. I hope 2012 brings me a calm where I can focus on my interests (including yoga and cooking!) and find time to LIVE as well!

  4. Would love to hear more about how you taught yourself photography and places you learned from!

  5. I love all you accomplished this year! :) I had a CRAZY year of getting married, moving, and starting a new job. I'm looking forward to 2012 being nice and calm!

  6. I feel the same about 2011. It was good but wasn't filled with as many milestones as years past.

    I think I've finally come into my own at work. I took on some new project and got rid of a few duties I didn't like.

    I also discovered pilates and really love it. i can't wait to start practicing again when my travel schedule is lighter.

  7. How did you overcome being intimidated by yoga? I would love some tips as I want to try, but I am scared!

  8. Love this list! It sounds like you made a lot of personal growth this year, which is awesome. I don't think I've had quite enough distance from 2011 to process it much of my life has changed and it's definitely a struggle for me to wrap my head around it all.
